Data Sources

Ask Grandma Kylie is built on a mix of carefully sourced historical records, local knowledge, and community memory. We believe in transparency, gratitude, and giving credit where it’s due.

So far, Ask Grandma Kylie can answer questions and share information based on the following datasets:

South Australian Births 1836–1860
South Australian Deaths 1836–1855
South Australian Marriages 1836–1857
These records were originally compiled by Barry Leadbeater, a passionate family historian whose now-defunct website was a valuable resource for many. The data used here was recovered via the Wayback Machine, and I share it with deep respect and appreciation for Barry’s work. I do not claim this material as my own.

1841 South Australian Census
From State Records of South Australia, this early census includes heads of household and helps us understand early settlement patterns.

Adelaide Historical Events
Data sourced from data.sa.gov.au, providing important context about events in and around Adelaide.

Echunga Primary School 1853–1975
This collection is special to me—I’m a former student of Echunga Primary and have local material related to the school’s long history. A booklet written by Mrs Jean Bates for the school’s 50th anniversary covers the years 1853 to 1975, and forms part of this collection.

Flaxley Post Office Records
Painstakingly created by my mum, Bette Willison (née Hardy), these records capture a slice of South Australian rural life. I’m proud to preserve and share her work.

South Australian Liquor Licences Before 1839
Originally published on the SAGenWeb website and submitted by Jenny Greenway of Unley in January 1997. This data offers a glimpse into the publicans and licensed venues of early South Australia.

Sweet Family Photo Collection
Samuel White Sweet 1825 – 1886 South Australian photographer. He left his career as a Master Mariner in the British Navy to become one of Australia’s first great outdoor photographers.

Lord Mayors of Adelaide (1840–2018)
Compiled from publicly available records on data.sa.gov.au, this list highlights civic leadership in Adelaide from colonial days to modern times.

Echunga and District Schools
Sourced from the book Echunga by Jack Whimpress, this collection adds depth to the education history of the district.

This is just the beginning. As I continue to add more records and stories, I’ll keep updating this page. If you’d like to contribute a local data set or correct an error, feel free to get in touch.
